Choosing a username for a nonprofit or community group

Short answer: Pick one name that works on Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat, register it on all three in the same session, and put the accounts under an organisation email that more than one trusted person can reach. Most username trouble for groups comes from accounts tied to one volunteer who later leaves.

Choose the name

Set up the accounts

  1. Create an organisation email, not a personal one.
  2. Register the username on all three platforms the same day.
  3. Turn on two-factor authentication and keep backup codes somewhere the group controls.
  4. Write down who has access and review it each year.

When the name is taken

If another group or person has it and is not posing as you, a claim usually does not fit. A registered mark can change that. See trademark routes by platform.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can a nonprofit claim a username more easily?

No. The platforms apply the same rules to everyone.

What if a former volunteer holds our accounts?

Ask them to hand access over in writing. If they will not, see username held by a former business partner.

Should we use our full legal name?

Only if it is short. Most groups use the name people actually call them.

Want it handled for you?

Send the username on WhatsApp or email. You hear whether it looks workable. See the refund policy on the pricing page.
