Username taken, inactive or available

Short answer: a username is taken when an account holds it, inactive when that account is quiet and available when the platform lets you register it now. Inactive still counts as taken. The only direct check is to try the name on the platform you want it on.

Taken means an account holds the name

Every username is unique on its platform. If another account has it, the platform rejects your attempt.

Inactive is a description, not a status

An account that has stopped posting still holds its username. None of the three platforms publishes a rule that frees a name because the account went quiet.

Available means the platform accepts it today

If your settings accept the name, it is yours to register. That can change later, so do not wait.

Check on each platform you care about

If it is held, look at the routes

The eligibility page lists which situations have a route. Otherwise see alternatives.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is inactive the same as available?

No. An inactive account still holds the username until the owner changes it or the platform removes the account.

Why can a username show as unavailable when I find no profile?

The account may be restricted, deactivated or recently deleted, so it may not appear in search.

Does checking a username alert the holder?

Trying a username in your own settings does not message the holder.

Want it handled for you?

Send the username on WhatsApp or email. You hear whether it looks workable, and the price is agreed before we start.
