Names, script and spelling in Australia
Usernames are plain text, so Australian English causes little trouble: no accents and no special letters. The usual snags are apostrophes and hyphens in names such as O’Brien or Smith-Jones. Apostrophes are not accepted on any of the three platforms. A hyphen is accepted on Snapchat as its one separator but not on Instagram or TikTok, so the choice is to join the letters, use an underscore or period, or add a short suffix.
One username on three platforms
| Platform | What to know |
|---|---|
| Letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters. | |
| TikTok | Letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and a change is allowed once every 30 days. |
| Snapchat | 3 to 15 characters, Latin letters, numbers and one separator, and a change is allowed once every 12 months. |
Read the username rules guide and same username on every platform before you settle on a spelling.
Local rules and what they do not cover
Australian Consumer Law is enforced by the ACCC and state fair trading offices, and the Privacy Act 1988 is overseen by the OAIC. Neither covers a platform’s decision about a username, which stays with the platform. What you send is a username and, where useful, proof tied to the name. Never a password or a login code.
Reference points: trade marks are handled by IP Australia, and personal data by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. These are not legal advice.
Before you ask for a claim
- See whether the username is taken, inactive or free with the username check.
- Settle one plain-letter spelling that fits all three platforms.
- Collect proof tied to the name: a mark, a business record or a profile that is posing as you.
The brand and trademark guide covers the proof side.
