Names, script and spelling in Italy
Italian names bring accented vowels, apostrophes and double surnames. A username takes none of the accents or apostrophes, so D’Angelo becomes dangelo or d_angelo depending on the platform and on what is free. Decide the plain spelling first and check it on Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.
One username on three platforms
| Platform | What to know |
|---|---|
| Letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters. | |
| TikTok | Letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and a change is allowed once every 30 days. |
| Snapchat | 3 to 15 characters, Latin letters, numbers and one separator, and a change is allowed once every 12 months. |
Read the username rules guide and same username on every platform before you settle on a spelling.
Local rules and what they do not cover
The Garante oversees data protection and the AGCM covers consumer and advertising practices, including how influencer content is labelled. A platform’s decision about a username is outside both. A failed claim is covered by the refund policy.
Reference points: trade marks are handled by the Italian Patent and Trademark Office (UIBM), and personal data by the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali. These are not legal advice.
Before you ask for a claim
- See whether the username is taken, inactive or free with the username check.
- Settle one plain-letter spelling that fits all three platforms.
- Collect proof tied to the name: a mark, a business record or a profile that is posing as you.
The brand and trademark guide covers the proof side.
