The three trademark routes side by side
| TikTok | Snapchat | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | Intellectual property report form | Trademark infringement report under its IP policy | Trademark reporting form, with a username infringement page |
| Who files | The rights owner or an authorised agent | The owner or an authorised representative | The trademark owner or an authorised agent |
| What the platform says it weighs | The mark, its owner and how the account infringes it | Whether the notice is valid. It says it usually cannot reassign usernames | Commercial use that makes people think the account is linked to the brand |
| Mark in a username alone | Not stated as enough | Not stated as enough | Snapchat says it is not a violation by itself |
| Typical evidence | Registration number, office, owner name, the handle | Registration certificate and proof of ownership or authority | Story images or commercial chats sent from the username |
Instagram: the mark and the misuse
The intellectual property form wants the registered mark, who owns it and what the account does with it. A profile that sells goods under your mark or presents itself as your brand gives the form something to act on. A profile that uses the same word in an unrelated way gives it much less.
TikTok: a reset is possible, a transfer is rare
TikTok says a username may be reset after a valid request such as a trademark notice, and separately that in most instances it cannot reassign a username to someone else. Plan for the name to be freed rather than handed over, and be ready to set it.
Snapchat: show commercial use
Snapchat says usernames are first come, first served and generally not transferable, and that a trademark in a username does not breach its policy on its own. The owner has to show the username is used commercially in a way that suggests an affiliation, such as Stories or Snaps that look like they come from the company. Without that evidence, Snapchat suggests picking a different username.
Prepare once, file three times
- Gather the registration certificate, the number and the office.
- Confirm who is filing: the owner or an authorised representative with written authority.
- Screenshot how each account uses the mark, with dates.
- Write down the exact username on each platform, since the spellings often differ.
- Pick a fallback per platform, so one refusal does not stall the others.
Usernm prepares and files these through each platform's official form. The platform makes the final decision, and a failed username claim is covered by the refund policy.
