Spelling a name from Belgium
Belgium has Dutch, French and German as official languages, so one name can have several spellings, some with accents. A username has to be plain letters, since Snapchat’s rule names Latin letters, and a bilingual brand has to pick one main spelling and check the others as protection.
What local law covers, and what it does not
The GDPR and the Belgian Data Protection Act protect personal data, and the Federal Public Service Economy covers consumer matters. A platform’s decision about a username is outside both. Passwords and login codes are never requested, and a failed claim is covered by the refund policy.
Reference points: trade marks are handled by the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP), and personal data by the Belgian Data Protection Authority. These are not legal advice.
A quick check from Belgium
- See whether the username is taken, inactive or free with the username check.
- Settle one plain-letter spelling that fits all three platforms.
- Collect proof tied to the name: a mark, a business record or a profile that is posing as you.
The brand and trademark guide covers the proof side.
Rules that decide whether one name fits everywhere
| Platform | What to know |
|---|---|
| Letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters. | |
| TikTok | Letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and a change is allowed once every 30 days. |
| Snapchat | 3 to 15 characters, Latin letters, numbers and one separator, and a change is allowed once every 12 months. |
Read the username rules guide and same username on every platform before you settle on a spelling.
