Username claims in Germany

Short answer: a username claim from Germany runs through the same Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat processes as anywhere else. The local part is practical: umlauts, the sharp s and German name order. The platform decides each request.

Names, script and spelling in Germany

A German username has to turn umlauts and the sharp s into plain letters, usually ae, oe, ue and ss, since Snapchat’s rule names Latin letters. Müller becomes mueller or muller depending on what is free, and both spellings are worth checking on all three platforms before you pick one.

One username on three platforms

PlatformWhat to know
InstagramLetters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters.
TikTokLetters, numbers, underscores and periods, and a change is allowed once every 30 days.
Snapchat3 to 15 characters, Latin letters, numbers and one separator, and a change is allowed once every 12 months.

Read the username rules guide and same username on every platform before you settle on a spelling.

Local rules and what they do not cover

The GDPR and the BDSG govern personal data in Germany, and consumer protection bodies and the Bundesnetzagentur cover other online services. None of them decides who holds a username. The platforms do. The price is agreed in your chat or email first, and a failed claim is covered by the refund policy.

Reference points: trade marks are handled by the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA), and personal data by the state and federal data protection authorities. These are not legal advice.

Before you ask for a claim

  1. See whether the username is taken, inactive or free with the username check.
  2. Settle one plain-letter spelling that fits all three platforms.
  3. Collect proof tied to the name: a mark, a business record or a profile that is posing as you.

The brand and trademark guide covers the proof side.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Does the EU’s Digital Services Act change how a username request works?

Not directly. The Digital Services Act sets duties for platforms on notices and moderation decisions, and the Bundesnetzagentur acts as Germany’s coordinator. A request for a handle still goes through the platform’s own forms.

How do I check whether a username is taken?

Search it on each platform and read the result. The username check guide explains what taken, inactive and available look like.

What does the refund policy cover?

A claim that fails is covered by the 100% refund policy, and the price is agreed in chat or email before any work starts.

Can I use the same username on Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat from Germany?

Only if each platform accepts it and it is free on each. Length and characters differ. See same username on every platform.
