Spelling a name from Austria
Austrian names use the same umlauts and sharp s as German ones, and the username has to be written in plain letters because Snapchat’s rule names Latin letters. A name such as Gruber, Strauss or Schönberg can have several plain spellings, so check which of them is free on all three platforms.
What local law covers, and what it does not
The GDPR and Austria’s Datenschutzgesetz govern personal data, with the Data Protection Authority as the regulator. The consumer protection bodies cover other online services. A username decision is outside both, and stays with the platform. Passwords and login codes are never needed.
Reference points: trade marks are handled by the Austrian Patent Office, and personal data by the Austrian Data Protection Authority. These are not legal advice.
A quick check from Austria
- See whether the username is taken, inactive or free with the username check.
- Settle one plain-letter spelling that fits all three platforms.
- Collect proof tied to the name: a mark, a business record or a profile that is posing as you.
The brand and trademark guide covers the proof side.
Rules that decide whether one name fits everywhere
| Platform | What to know |
|---|---|
| Letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters. | |
| TikTok | Letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and a change is allowed once every 30 days. |
| Snapchat | 3 to 15 characters, Latin letters, numbers and one separator, and a change is allowed once every 12 months. |
Read the username rules guide and same username on every platform before you settle on a spelling.
