Someone with the same name has my username

Short answer: if another person with the same name holds the username and uses it as themselves, there is usually no claim route, because they have as much right to their own name as you do. A route only opens if they pose as you, use your registered mark, or took a name that was yours. Otherwise the practical move is a clean variation used the same way on Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.

Sharing a name is not a rule breach

Platforms hand out usernames first come, first served. A person called Sam Lee who set up samlee years ago is using their own name, and no platform publishes a rule that gives it to a later Sam Lee. Reports exist for misuse, not for a better or more famous claim to the same name.

Check which situation you are in

  1. Open the profile and read the bio, photos and links. Does it present itself as you, or as its own person?
  2. Search for your own photos or logo on the profile. Copying them points to impersonation.
  3. If you hold a registered mark, check whether the account sells or promotes under it.
  4. Keep screenshots with dates. Evidence counts for more than a description.

Good alternatives when no route fits

A consistent variation everywhere usually does more for being found than the exact name on one platform.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can I report someone just for having my name?

No. Sharing a name is not impersonation. Impersonation means pretending to be you, for example using your photos or claiming to be your business.

They have not posted in years. Does that change anything?

Not on its own. An inactive account still holds its username. TikTok says long-inactive usernames may be reset, but it usually cannot reassign them to a specific person.

Can I offer to buy the username from them?

Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat do not allow usernames to be sold or traded. Usernm does not arrange purchases or swaps.

What if I am well known under that name?

Being known by a name helps when someone pretends to be you. It does not move a username away from another person who genuinely has that name.
