Changing usernames for a rebrand

Short answer: check that the new name is free or claimable on all three platforms before you announce anything, then change Snapchat last, because it allows only one username change every 12 months. TikTok allows a change once every 30 days and Instagram may need to check changes on accounts that reach a lot of people. Changing in the wrong order is the usual way a rebrand ends up with three different usernames.

A working order for a rebrand

  1. Write the new name in the spelling that fits Snapchat's 3 to 15 characters and one separator.
  2. Check it on Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat on the same day.
  3. If it is taken anywhere, decide on a claim, a wait or one variation before going further.
  4. Change Instagram and TikTok, then update bios, link pages and email signatures.
  5. Change Snapchat last, after the other two are live and spelled the same.
  6. Keep a note of the old usernames and the date each was released.

If the new name is taken on one platform

A rebrand often finds the name free on two platforms and taken on the third. If a profile there uses your new registered mark or poses as you, a claim route may fit; the trademark forms comparison shows what each platform asks for. If it is an unrelated holder, one consistent variation on all three is usually better than mixing spellings.

What to do with the old usernames

Once you change, the old name goes back into the pool and anyone may be able to set it. If people still search for it, consider keeping it on a second account with a short note pointing to the new one, within each platform's rules. Do not sell or trade the old name; none of the three platforms allows it.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Will my followers move with the new username?

Yes. Changing a username keeps the same account, followers and posts. Links that used the old username may stop working, so update them.

Can someone take my old username after I change it?

Yes, once you release it, anyone may be able to set it. Some brands keep a second account on the old name to point people to the new one.

What if the new name is taken on one platform?

Decide before launch whether to wait, claim through a route that fits, or use one consistent variation everywhere.

Do I need a trademark for the new name?

Not to change your own username. It matters if you need to claim the name from another account.
